Sidda Sanna is a fine rice from Karnataka. The story most often told is that it is the farmer Bore Gowda’s selection; others note its resemblance to other local farmer rices cultivated in the region.

Description

THE CULTURAL & ECOLOGICAL LIFE OF THIS RICE

The story most often told about Siddha Sanna is that it is a variety developed by a farmer by the name of Boregowda from Mandya, close to Sona Masuri (which is not a desi variety) and called it Siddhasanna, in memory of his parents Siddhappa and Sannamma. Others in the region, however, suggest that this may just be a farmer selection that very closely resembles other local rice varietals commonly grown in the region.

The rice is very popular among organic farmers and consumers in Karnataka due to its good cooking versatility and properties so close to Sona Masuri. Siddha Sanna grows well in both Kharif (summer) and Rabi (winter) seasons, making it suitable to be grown in different climates. Boregowda claims that it is resistant to pests and diseases, a fact which is widely appreciated among growers. This rice is light brown in colour if purchased from the farmer, Bore Gowda himself.

CULINARY USES

  • Siddha Sanna rice has good cooking consistency. It has a nutty taste and its ability to stay as separate grains makes it ideal for a different set of chittrana dishes (rice based recipes)
  • Popular Recipes: Vangibhaat (Brinjal Rice), Chittrannna (Lemon/Heeralikayi Rice), Hulianna (Puliogre/Tamarind Rice) and even Pulavs.
  • This rice can be easily used for making crisp dosas.
  • Siddhasanna is widely used as a table rice which goes well with almost all the regular accompaniments i.e. Saaru/Sambhar/Majjige Huli/Dals.
