Sources We Trust

Our Rice Library listings only name farmer sources where we have permission to do so. Below is a list of retailers from whom we have each at some point or other procured rice. Many work directly with growers to source native rice; many are involved in conservation efforts directly or indirectly. This list will continue to grow and/or change as we find new retail sources.

Chennai/Tamil Nadu

  1. Biobasics [sources rice from trusted growers in various regions in India, based in Coimbatore]
  2. Spirit of the Earth [sells the rice they grow in their seed conservation project and rice farm in Manjakkudi, near Kumbakkonam]
  3. OFM/Organic Farmers’ Market [sources heritage rices from trusted farmers and sells via Chennai outlets; see their rice list here]
  4. Sempulam [a group of farmers, scientists, and researchers with an organic food store based in Chennai]
  5. Vivasayee’s Life [a farmer collective using a single platform to market direct-to-consumer]
  6. Goodness Farm [run by a food technologist, and drawing other organic farmers together, committed to sustainable farming, and producing nutritious and ethically sourced foods]

BAngalore/Karnataka

  1. Buffalo Back Collective [farmer’s collective with store outlets in Bangalore]
  2. Krishiyog Naturals [sells some products from their family-owned farm in Belagvi, Karnataka; based in Bangalore]
  3. Rajamudi Organics [sources rice from known local farmers, based in Bangalore]
  4. Sahaja Organics [the marketing arm of the Karnataka organic farmers’ association Sahaja Samrudha; based in Bangalore]

ahmedabad/gujarat & MUMBAI/MAHARASHTRA

  1. Aranya India [an Agroecology-based producer company formed by small and marginal tribal farmers in the Aravalli forests of eastern Gujarat]
  2. Connect Nature [Ahmedabad outlet for rice farmers in Dang, +91 84011 84715, +91 98241 85725]
  3. MonksBouffe [Monks Bouffe is a Social enterprise working with farmers/farmer groups who believe in ecological methods of farming and create value added products.]
  4. OOO Farms [works with farmers in Gujarat and Maharashtra trying to safeguard indigenous farming practices]

kolkata/West Bengal & Odisha

  1. Mye-farm [agri enterprise promoting the concept of “grow your own rice”] website
  2. Organic Utpanna [a Government recognized startup supports small and tribal farmers, promotes indigenous food and sustainability]
  3. Amar Khamar [sources rice from trusted growers in various regions in India, based in Kolkata]
  4. Paushtik Life [a platform for farmers, co-operatives, producer organizations, and others, operating from Kolkata]

Shalikuta's rice library where we synthesize our learnings from various sources about each landrace and present it in ways we hope you will find both informative and useful. Our goal is to make this a resource for all in knowing our folk rices and bringing them richly and abundantly into our lives.
